Learning Outcomes

After completing this module you will be able to:

Understand the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) and how to apply the relevant content in the capacity of a payroll administrator.

Explain the purpose application of the BCEA.

Apply the “preservation of secrecy” as referred to in the BCEA.

List the employees who are not regulated by the Working Time and Rules of the BCEA.

Understand the sections that address the Working Time and Rules in the BCEA. This includes: Ordinary Hours of Work, Overtime, Meal Intervals, Daily Rest Period, Work on Sunday, Night Work and Public Holidays.

Specify to whom the following sections in the BCEA applies to: Leave, Particulars of Employment and Termination of Employment in the BCEA.

Explain the various leave types, including the leave rules involved in each.  This includes: Annual Leave, Sick Leave, Family Responsibility Leave, Maternity Leave, Parental Leave, Adoption Leave and Commissioning of Parental Leave.

Differentiate between Wage versus Remuneration.

Categorise payroll components into Wage and Remuneration.

List the items an employer should supply an employee when the employee commences employment.

Specify which records of the employee should be kept as well as the period of time it should be kept.

Explain the items that should display on an employee’s payslip.

Discuss the requirements for an employer to deduct items from an employee’s remuneration.

Apply the relevant notice period based on the employee’s length of service.

List the items that should be included on an employee’s Certificate of Service.
